Description: VESSELS of the Roman metalwork
III century AD, silver-gilt

The three vessels are very rare examples of the Roman metalwork, which were part of the ancient set ministerium. They are known as piperatoria - vessels for spices - related to the use of the Indian pepper imported to Rome, or as salinum-salt-cellar. Apart from the direct utilitarian function, the salt-cellar was also associated with the religious practices in the cult of the Lares, both domestic, and those of the community.
