Gift to Louis XIV in 1696 by the nuncio of Pope Innocent XII, The Entombment of Veronese was presented until the French revolution as above door in the large lounge of the royal apartments in the palace of Versailles. The body of Christ is deposited in a sarcophagus by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, assisted by a servant. On the left, the Virgin is consoled by St. John and the torchbearer, while one of the two Maries kneels before the crown of thorns, kissing the left hand of the crucified.
