Anthonie van Dyck (The Apostle Judas Thaddeus) in Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam

Description:
Artwork: The Apostle Judas Thaddeus, 1618 - 1620
               Purchase: 1958

The young Van Dyck was very good at capturing the character displayed in the heads of old men, like this dramatic Jude Thaddeus. It is from a series of the twelve apostles with Christ based on a comparable suit by Rubens, Van Dyck's teacher. The little-known St. Jude (not to be confused with his traitorous namesake, Judas iscoriot) was a carpenter.
