Description: “CANDIDE or The Optimism” by Voltaire.
An authentic specimen of edition 1772, London, kept in the Castle of Voltaire / Château de Voltaire / in Ferney, France. The first illustrated edition of Candide. From collection Andrew Brown.
This satirical novel, was written by Voltaire, probably in 1759. It became the most published and most read works of Voltaire, suggesting "incorrigible" optimism through its personages. Using masterfully sarcastic tone in the work, Voltaire managed to push their philosophical presented criticism of the mores of society.
